The goal of the master colorist is to find a color that compliments your skin
tone in order to minimize flaws and bring out the best in your complexion.
Matching your hair color to your skin tone and eye color is the ultimate way to
ensure that your hair color turns out fabulous and that you have a look which
will bring out the glow in your skin and the twinkle in your eye. While there
are a variety of complexions, all complexions fall into two different skin tone
categories - warm or cool.
It is important to know which skin tone you really
are. You are likely a “warm” if you have golden, olive or dark eyes (most
Latinas, Asians, and African Americans fall into this category) “Warm woman tan
easily and the veins in their inner wrists are green. You’ re a “cool” if you
have fair skin and blue or green eyes, you burn before you tan and the veins in
your wrists run blue. Once you know if you’re a warm or a cool, you’ll better
know what shades of color look good with your skin tone
.
Each color blond, brunette or red gives off a different impression.
For instance blond hair is a delicate color. Some women look good in any color,
but most women don't. If you had blonde hair as a kid, you'll likely look good
with blonde hair as an adult. You'll also look good blonde if you have pink skin
that burns easily, and blue or green eyes.
Almost everyone can go red, what’s important is finding the right shade of
red. Red adds warmth and is a sexy color which looks great on all skin tones,
especially yellow and white. In addition red makes a great contrast with light
eye colors.
Choosing the right color to apply really depends on the amount of
warmth that is in the hair already. Say you walk in with brassy, faded hair.
Your stylist will mix a couple of colors to make sure there is a fair balance of
warm and neutral colors in the hair, rather than simply applying only the color
you pointed at in the color book. This will only create more warmth.
